“Write here and now, wherever you may be.”
Don’t worry if it’s not the perfect setting for calligraphy.
Even on bumpy ground, at minus 24 degrees on a frozen snowfield, or atop the shifting surface of water—let nothing hold you back.
A little dirt on your work? A splash of waves or water causing the ink to run and spoil the neat look? No worries at all.
Feel your heartbeat. Let it guide your brush.
Learn the time-honored art of Japanese calligraphy, starting with ink grinding and ending with your finished work on a traditional paper board (shikishi) or a folding fan (sensu) to take home.
Ink Grinding
Experience the process of making your own ink by grinding an ink stick on an inkstone.
How to Hold the Brush & Basic Strokes
Learn the correct brush position and practice fundamental calligraphy strokes.
Practice Your Chosen Kanji
Select one kanji (Chinese character) you’d like to write. Practice on washi paper with guidance, including a model/example and explanations of the character’s meaning.
Create Your Final Piece
Once you’re comfortable, write your chosen character on a paper board (shikishi) or folding fan (sensu) as your final artwork.
Take Home Your Artwork
You can bring home your finished calligraphy piece as a memorable souvenir of your experience.
This plan combines both traditional calligraphy, focusing on correct and well-formed characters, and creative calligraphy, emphasizing personal expression. Under the guidance of a Japanese calligrapher, you will first practice standard calligraphy, then challenge yourself with “art calligraphy.”
(Note: Bottled ink will be used. The theme is “Wind.”)
Write “Wind” in Standard Kaisho Style
Learn how to hold the brush and form the strokes correctly as you practice writing the character 風 (fū).
Explore Creative Calligraphy
Observe various expressive renditions of 風 to understand the “art” aspect of calligraphy.
Express “Spring Wind”
Using a sample for guidance, create your own version of the character 風 to capture the feeling of a warm spring breeze.
Take Your Work Home
Your finished piece will be placed in a protective plastic bag so you can bring it home safely.
Experience writing a single kanji character on a massive sheet of paper (3 × 6 shaku, approximately 90 × 180 cm) using a large brush.
Choose Your Favorite Kanji
Select one character you’d like to write.
Practice Basic Strokes on Smaller Paper
Warm up by learning and practicing fundamental brush strokes on standard-size washi paper.
Rehearse Your Selected Kanji
Refine your technique by writing your chosen character multiple times.
Take On the Big Paper
Finally, put all your energy into writing the character on the large 3 × 6 shaku paper.
