A: Traditional Calligraphy Experience (60 minutes/¥12,000)

Learn the time-honored art of Japanese calligraphy, starting with ink grinding and ending with your finished work on a traditional paper board (shikishi) or a folding fan (sensu) to take home.

Program Details

  1. Ink Grinding

    • Experience the process of making your own ink by grinding an ink stick on an inkstone.

  2. How to Hold the Brush & Basic Strokes

    • Learn the correct brush position and practice fundamental calligraphy strokes.

  3. Practice Your Chosen Kanji

    • Select one kanji (Chinese character) you’d like to write. Practice on washi paper with guidance, including a model/example and explanations of the character’s meaning.

  4. Create Your Final Piece

    • Once you’re comfortable, write your chosen character on a paper board (shikishi) or folding fan (sensu) as your final artwork.

  5. Take Home Your Artwork

    • You can bring home your finished calligraphy piece as a memorable souvenir of your experience.

This plan combines both traditional calligraphy, focusing on correct and well-formed characters, and creative calligraphy, emphasizing personal expression. Under the guidance of a Japanese calligrapher, you will first practice standard calligraphy, then challenge yourself with “art calligraphy.”
(Note: Bottled ink will be used. The theme is “Wind.”)

  1. Write “Wind” in Standard Kaisho Style

    • Learn how to hold the brush and form the strokes correctly as you practice writing the character 風 (fū).

  2. Explore Creative Calligraphy

    • Observe various expressive renditions of 風 to understand the “art” aspect of calligraphy.

  3. Express “Spring Wind”

    • Using a sample for guidance, create your own version of the character 風 to capture the feeling of a warm spring breeze.

  4. Take Your Work Home

    • Your finished piece will be placed in a protective plastic bag so you can bring it home safely.

Experience writing a single kanji character on a massive sheet of paper (3 × 6 shaku, approximately 90 × 180 cm) using a large brush.

Program Details

  1. Choose Your Favorite Kanji

    • Select one character you’d like to write.

  2. Practice Basic Strokes on Smaller Paper

    • Warm up by learning and practicing fundamental brush strokes on standard-size washi paper.

  3. Rehearse Your Selected Kanji

  4. Take On the Big Paper

    • Finally, put all your energy into writing the character on the large 3 × 6 shaku paper.
